Medical Acupuncture is the term used to describe acupuncture performed by a medical doctor trained and licensed in Western medicine who has also had thorough training in acupuncture as a subspecialty practice.
Acupuncture is a method of encouraging the body to promote natural healing and improve functioning by inserting sterile and disposable needles which, for most patients, is a non-painful experience, and applying either heat or electrical stimulation at the precise acupuncture points. This works by unblocking the body's energy channels, or "meridians" to help reestablish the regular flow, thus moving energy. The body's natural chemicals, hormones and neurotransmitters are released to influence the internal regulation system to promote physical and emotional well-being. Most patients experience a sense of deep relaxation following the treatment.
